The fun has begun! We are halfway through the growing season and the tomatoes are beginning to ripen. While we won’t be begin to harvest our crops until the end of the month, we are taking full advantage of the herbs we planted. Stay tuned…

On June 16th, we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of our Bike to Work Program and Bike to Work Day this morning with four group rides to the CBBEL offices, followed by a group breakfast!

‘We Compost’ Silver Partner

CBBEL has been recognized as Silver Partner by the Illinois Food Scraps Coalition (illinoiscomposts.org) for our compost system, where we provide compost bins to help put our trash to good use. CBBEL’s Rooftop Garden

On May 25th, Doug Gotham and Pete Magnelli organized the 6th CBBEL rooftop vegetable garden. Over a dozen volunteers turned out to help prep the pots, plant and water. This year’s crop includes 48 tomatoes and 40 pepper plants, 6 cucumbers, 4 zucchini, 2 sweet potatoes, lettuce, onions and herbs.

Chicago River Day

On Saturday, May 14th, CBBEL was the site sponsor for one of more than 60 river cleanups for Chicago River day. Monica Giermek (Water Resources Department) organized the cleanup with CBBEL employees as well as Calumet Stormwater Collaborative members.
