CBBEL designed the reconstruction of 2.5 miles to provide a four lane urban highway, auxiliary turn lanes, and modernized traffic signals. A closed drainage system, detention ponds, and profile adjustments were also included. The roadway profiles were raised above the 100-year flood elevation and the existing culverts were upsized to convey the stormwater so the roadway will not be overtopped. The box culvert included a high-low chamber system, mimicking the existing conditions to preserve the water surface elevations. To meet the Lake County Forest Preserve’s requests the two detention basins were naturalized, returning over 25 acres of farmland to native conditions.
