Chicago Avenue/Sheridan Road Multi-Modal Corridor Improvement

The project was developed using a “Complete Street” philosophy, promoting environmentally friendly and efficient design to construct a multi-modal corridor adjacent to downtown and Northwestern University’s campus along Sheridan Road. The holistic design of the project was to improve safety along the corridor for all users including pedestrians, bicyclists, mass transit, cabs, and motor vehicles using the corridor. The centerpiece of the improvement is a 2-way protected bike lane along the east side of the corridor improving safety for pedestrians by eliminating cyclists riding the sidewalks. Physical separation between cyclists and vehicles was created by “right-sizing” Sheridan Road and the lane reduction allowed the implementation of safe pedestrian, bicycle, and transit friendly routes minimizing conflicts. This project was coordinated through a multi-year public engagement incorporating multiple stakeholders in the community, including Northwestern.
